Blocking and reporting serve different purposes. Blocking usually aims to limit future contact from an account, while reporting asks the service to review conduct against its rules. Exactly what happens, what the other person sees, and which records remain varies by platform.

You do not need to resolve an argument before choosing either option. If an interaction becomes threatening, coercive, fraudulent, or repeatedly unwanted, your first priority can be to end it. A clear record can help you describe the problem without continuing a conversation that is making you uncomfortable.

Choose the action that fits the problem

A mismatch or an ordinary declined invitation may only call for ending the conversation. Harassment, impersonation, suspected scams, threats, or other rule violations may also merit a report. Review the platform's categories before submitting, and select the closest accurate description. Do not label behavior more seriously just to increase the chance of a response. You can block a person even when you cannot prove a policy breach; you are deciding whether you want contact, not issuing a public judgment about their character.

Keep a note of the report date and any confirmation reference that the platform supplies. If you need to follow up, that record can make the inquiry more specific. Do not repeatedly submit speculative accusations in the hope of accelerating a review. A concise account of new observed behavior is more useful than multiplying the same complaint.

Save relevant details before making changes

Where practical and appropriate, keep the account name, profile identifier, dates, relevant messages, and any transaction details. A screenshot may be useful, but it should not include unrelated people's private information. Some actions can make a conversation harder to access, so check the service's guidance before deleting an account or unmatching. Do not prolong contact just to collect more evidence. If there is an immediate threat or emergency, getting help takes priority over completing a perfect record of the interaction.

Write a short factual report

Describe what occurred, when it occurred, and why it concerns you. Separate a direct quotation or observed action from your interpretation. For example, repeated messages after a request to stop are more useful to describe than saying someone has a bad personality. Add relevant attachments through the official process when available. Keep the report focused on the account being reported. Platforms may not share all investigation details, and a lack of detailed feedback does not establish whether action was taken.

Understand the limits of an account block

A block may not prevent someone from using another account, contacting you through a different service, or seeing material outside the platform. Check which visibility and communication controls the service actually offers. Tighten other account settings if the person has your wider contact details. Avoid responding to new messages merely to repeat the boundary. If the behavior continues, document the pattern and consider appropriate local support. A platform tool can be part of a response without being a complete solution to every kind of unwanted contact.

Use the appropriate channel beyond the app

For suspected financial fraud, platform reporting may be supplemented by official fraud reporting channels. In the United States, the FTC and the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center accept relevant reports. Contact your payment provider promptly if a transaction was involved, without assuming that funds can be recovered. Credible threats or immediate danger may require local authorities or emergency services. Avoid posting sensitive evidence publicly as a substitute for reporting; it can expose your own details and other people's information while failing to reach the right reviewer.

The takeaway

Block to set a contact boundary and report to describe concerning conduct. Keep relevant records where possible, use accurate language, and recognize when a situation needs help beyond the platform.
